June marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, a monumental fight for LGBTQ rights in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. In honor of this event and the change it brought about, WorldPride, a six-weeklong celebration of the LGBTQ community, is being held in New York City. In honor of the Pride this year, the 14th Street Y is working with Education Alliance to present a series of events titled Live Free, Love Fierce spanning May 31-June 30.
As part of the series 14th Street Y is putting on a Family Fun Day on the 14Y rooftop on June 15 from 3-6pm. The event includes face painting, arts and crafts, snacks and refreshments, and a special youth Pride march! The event is free for children, but there is a recommended $10 donation.
The series also features a Storytelling Worship with The Moth’s Community Program. Participants can hear stories, find inspiration, and give and receive feedback on their works. The workshop is on June 10, from 6-9pm. Interested parties should register by emailing ldaniels@14streety.org.
The series culminates with participating in the Pride March on June 30. Education Alliance will be helping out, providing support, and celebrating alongside the rest of the city. Families are encouraged to join in the festivities as well and march in celebration of the community.
The 14th Street Y is located at 344 E. 14 St., East Village. Its hours are Monday-Friday, 6am-10pm; Saturday-Sunday, 7am-9pm. For more information visit 14streety.org/PRIDE or call 212-780-0800.
