Manhattan’s Children’s Museum of the Arts has partnered up with 3DP4E (3D Printing for Everyone)–a new 3D printing company on a mission to empower through technology, design and entrepreneurism–on a new exhibition called “Into the Third Dimension: 3D Printing for Young Artists.” The exhibit opened this Thursday, and will be running through January 11, 2015. This exhibit is truly unique, as it uses a 3D printer to transform children’s artwork from the museum’s permanent collections into 3D objects, made of gypsum powder, layers of ink, and bonding agent.
The exhibit allows visitors to compare and contrast the two- and three-dimensional forms of the children’s artwork. In addition to showcasing children’s art, the exhibition also includes a brief educational video which shows the process of turning the 2D drawing into a 3D object. The video teaches visitors more about the fascinating process of 3D printing and how it can be used as a new artistic technique.
During the exhibit’s run, twenty young CMA artists will be selected through a raffle to have their drawings transformed into a 3D printed object. Near the end of the exhibition in January, the twenty lucky kids will be invited to present their three dimensional object of their artwork at CMA. If your children might be interested in participating, make sure to drop in at one of the Fine Arts Workshop sessions for a chance to have their work rendered in 3D! cmany.org
