A rambling fall hike with the family is a perfect way to take in fall foliage and enjoy some quality time in the great outdoors. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite local options, which are gentle enough for hikers of all ages.
Bronx River Parkway Reservation
This is a 11.6 mile long linear park in southern Westchester County. The trail can be used for hiking, walking, running, mountain biking, and, in the winter, cross-country skiing. The landscape has ponds, wooden footbridges, and a variety of native trees and shrubs; so it is perfect for anyone who loves studying nature. If you want to see some spectacular views, make your way to Bear Mountain in Orange County. It is surrounded by woods, so it is the perfect place to experience the fall foliage. The Hudson River, the hills of the West Point Military Reservation, and Brooks Lake are all visible below. The summit loop is a short 1.3 miles and is of easy to moderate difficulty. If you prefer a shorter option in Westchester County,this little oasis is only three miles long. Despite its small size, it has plenty to offer. This preserve in Esopus, Ulster County offers a variety of trails. It is a great location to take young children and teach them about nature. There are plenty of birds and small mammals to observe; if you’re lucky, you might see a bald eagle. After exploring, you can have a pleasant picnic. Located in Red Hook, Dutchess County, this park features nearly 2 miles of trails through meadows and woods with rustic cedar pavilions, footbridges, and benches. This is a good place to go if you desire a tranquil hike or walk. It also allows bird watching, nature study, picnicking, and dog walking on a leash. There is a legend that Irving came up with the idea for his iconic story Rip Van Winkle here–the Catskill Mountains, where the main character falls asleep, are distant but visible.
