5 Life Lessons From Joan Barnes

joanRecently, on June 16, entrepreneur, mother, and author Joan Barnes (the founder of Gymboree) came to the 92Y to discuss work-live life values and entrepreneurism, as well as her book Play It Forward.

Sitting in a room surrounded by women whose joy-filled smiles beamed with years of wisdom and success, I may have gotten the feeling that the evening’s discussion would be aimed at an audience with much more life experience than myself. I was pleasantly surprised when that feeling disappeared within seconds of Barnes beginning the “Play it Forward” discussion that took place last night at the 92Y.

Barnes proved to be an instant role model with her first words and taught me five valuable lessons in only one short hour.

1. You don’t have to “have it all” to actually have it all: “Not in my experience” Barnes says when asked if she thought one could truly “have it all.” Rather, she emphasized the great happiness that can come from finding and focusing on your individual values.

2. Don’t be shy — take advantage of the women who came before us: Barnes was a pioneer in the world of mom-preneurs, but because of women like her, women like us have inspirational figures to turn to. They carved their own path and they’re excited to help us carve ours.

3. “Know when to say no”: said panel member Beth Feldman, founder of Role Mommy. A balanced life means knowing when to take time for yourself and being able to admit it.

4. Sharing is caring — share your stories: Sharing your stories has double-sided benefits. You have the chance to sort through your own life events and someone else has the chance to learn from it.

5. Make success on your own terms. “Do the best you can with what you’ve got,” said panel member Joy Rose, founder of Mamapalooza. Don’t let the drive for success take away from the self you know and respect. Rather, go about the journey in a way that boosts your confidence.
