92nd Street Y is launching its first-ever Parkour and Sports Adventure Camp on June 24. For any or all of 9 weeks, campers ages 5-12 with a thirst for thrills can hone in on their ninja skills and master the jumping, tumbling, and balancing art of parkour. The Upper East Side Y invites campers to explore the unique indoor obstacle course and parents to observe their little ones. The program is a great opportunity for campers in the New York City area to learn basketball, swimming, Tai Kwando, and photography as well.
Born of a scrappy parkour training team in September 2018, the first summer Parkour and Sports Adventure Camp will be held Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm from June 24-Aug. 30. Extended care is available from 8:15am-6pm. Whether a child elects to attend a single week or the nine-week program, the camp is designed to meet each participant at his or her skill level and build from there.
“There’s this really great philosophy that we’re teaching with parkour,” says Katera Noviello, the director of athletics at 92Y. “You just see such a boost in confidence with this kind of training.”
Every day at Parkour and Sports Adventure Camp involves parkour and ninja training. On Wednesday afternoons, the young ninja warriors participate in a special indoor obstacle course decked out with lights and music, and parents are invited to observe. On Thursdays, campers will practice Parkour skills in Central Park including balancing, flipping, and leaping on the playground under the close supervision of the camp’s USA Gymnastics certified instructors, all of whom are parkour specialists. They will also have the opportunity to take a Huddle Up Flag Football lesson. When they’re not working on perfecting their jumps, campers can learn about obstacle course creation in the parkour design lab as well as practice photography with their parkour poses and learn about stop-motion animation.
