BIG TIP: What’s Hot In Classes
Some of the hottest new classes for kids are geared toward helping them become mini adults. Think: calming yoga instruction, cooking international cuisine and learning a second language. These classes present children with opportunities to broaden their horizons.
- Bilingualism: When it comes to learning a new language, it seems the current mindset is: the younger, the better. Many programs have ways of introducing new languages to kids as young as infants! The big question for your child and your family is whether to opt for total immersion or a less intense curriculum.
- Cooking: Kiddies are learning how to whip up nutritious, organic fare—perhaps better than their parents! Some things you may want to consider: The expertise of the instructor, dietary restrictions and whether the class offers an interesting mix of food, fun and cultural experiences.
- Yoga: The incredible popularity of Mommy & Me classes has found its way onto the yoga mats. And now older kids are also saying “namaste” at these relaxing yet fun movement classes for focused exercise and a healthy dose of quiet.
BIG TIP: How Young Is Too Young?
In the world of extracurriculars, there is increasing pressure for kids to specialize in an activity they are passionate about, even if that means cutting out or cutting way down on other areas of interest. Whether it’s sports, art, music or chess, kids are faced with the choice of going deep and often getting competitive at younger and younger ages. What’s a concerned parent to do? Let’s start with this important tidbit: As Dr. Paul Weiss, Chief Program Officer at Asphalt Green, who has a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, noted to us, parents should realize that, in sports at least, there really isn’t a connection between early triumphs and later success at the highest levels. “There is evidence that success in sports at the age of 10 or 11 generally has little correlation with later success when athletes are 17 or 18—the critical years for many athletes in terms of their physical development, capacity for performance and timing to participate in college athletics.”
- Moreover, if your goal is to raise a child with a lifetime attachment to physical activity (or any other passion), here’s what Dr. Weiss recommends:
- Make participation in sports and physical fitness a priority in your family, at a comparable priority level as music, art, reading and other pursuits.
- Let your child prioritize “fun” in his or her sport choices.
- The first goal should be mastery of skills, not objective performance.
- As children’s bodies change and develop, particularly with the onset of puberty, their physical abilities may similarly morph. Exposure to multiple sports throughout elementary and middle school can ease these transitions by providing the child with the broadest possible athletic skill set and the confidence to refocus on a sport that better suits them.
- When your child crosses the threshold into the tween years, it’s time to start thinking about sport specialization. However, the focus should still be on mastery of skills.
- The most important advice: raise the whole child and make sports a critical part of this whole.
