You’ve heard the expression “It’s raining cats and dogs,” but what about fish and spiders? According to local meteorologist Bill Evans, it’s actually possible—fish and spiders fall from the sky as much as 40 times a year.
Evans, the 12-time Emmy Award-winning weatherman for WABC, Channel 7 in New York City, has compiled a collection of such fun facts, along with stories, experiments, and explanations about weather, into a new book for kids called “It’s Raining Fish and Spiders.”
In addition to forecasting the weather, Evans, who lives with his wife and four children in Old Greenwich, CT, regularly speaks at elementary and middle schools in the New York metro area, teaching kids about meteorology. He got the idea for the 240-page “It’s Raining Fish and Spiders” through the latter experience, when he realized that young kids are fascinated by weather and the natural world.

Targeted to kids in second through fifth grade, the book is both fact-filled and fun to read, covering everything from tornadoes and hurricanes to lightning and snowstorms. Evans addresses weather myths and facts, from “Will opening a window save my house during a tornado?” to “Where’s the hottest place on Earth?”
The book also includes simple and fun weather experiments that can be performed at home without expensive equipment, as well as Evans’ own most exciting weather stories (flying through hurricanes, chasing down tornadoes, and visiting the coldest place on Earth, to name just a few).
Watch Bill Evan in action and learn how you can make it rain in your own home!
