Great (And Free!) Outdoor Movies For Families This Month

The summer’s not quite over yet! The city’s amazing menu of outdoor movie nights continue into August, so grab a picnic basket and kick back with the family. The best part: Most of these screenings are free.

 

Mondays

RCN Monday Night Movies, Waterside Plaza
Anyone can enjoy some free popcorn and a movie at this apartment complex every Monday this. Starting at dusk, bring out the folding chairs and blankets to make the most of the night. “Whale Rider” (August 12) and “Muppet Treasure Island” (August 19), anyone?

2013 Movie Night in Astoria Park, Shore Boulevard between Hell Gate Bridge and the Pool
This summer, Astoria Park offers you and your family some popular children’s movies–both new and old. On select Mondays in July and August at 8:30pm, watch recent hits like “Brave” (August 19) and classics like “Finding Nemo” (August 26th).

HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival, Bryant Park
For its last outdoor theater night of the season, the Bryant Park lawn opens at 5pm to screen “E.T. the Extraterrestial” at sunset on August 19.

 

Wednesdays

Summer on the Hudson: Movies Under the Stars, Pier 1, Riverside Park South
Enjoy a family film while taking in a beautiful view of the sunset over the Hudson River, such as the comedy about a capella competitions, “Pitch Perfect” (August 14).

SummerScreen, McCarren Park, corner of Bedford Avenue and North 12th Street
Starting July 10, Williamsburg’s biggest outdoor film series will bring you a movie every Wednesday night at sundown. Be sure to arrive when doors open at 6pm to enjoy the live band’s music before the show.

See/Change Front/Row CinemaSouth Street Seaport
On August 14, catch a screening of “The Amazing Spider-Man” for a night of good versus evil starting at sunset. 

 

Thursdays

Central Park Conservancy Film Festival, between Sheep Meadow and 72nd Street Cross Drive
This year, the audience gets to vote for each film screening. For the Classic theme on August 22, “West Side Story” has won out as the fave. 

 

Fridays

Family Night at the Central Park Conservancy Film Festival is August 23m featuring the swashbuckling “Hook.”

Intrepid Summer Movie Series, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, Pier 86
All aboard! Catch “The Karate Kid” (August 23) from atop the deck of a gigantic ship. Seating is first come first served.

River Flicks For Kids, Hudson River Park, Pier 46
Every Friday from July 12 to August 23, River Flicks features PG movies including “Rise of the Guardians” (August 9), “Beetlejuice” (August 16), and “Adventures of Tintin” (August 23).

Summer Film Series at Narrows Botanical Gardens, Shore Road and 72nd Street in Bay Ridge
Narrows Botanical Gardens is hosting one more Family Night during its summer film series this season, featuring “ice Age” on August 16. Refreshments will be served. Plus, be sure to arrive early for games and activities.

 

Saturdays

See/Change Front/Row CinemaSouth Street Seaport
The next family-friendly Saturday screening in these series is technically next month, on September 7, but we love the heartwarming Pixar story of “Up” too much to not give it a mention here.

 

Sundays

Movie Night Madness, Habana Outpost, 757 Fulton Street
Every week at 8pm, come out to Fort Greene, Brooklyn, for a night filled with food and film fun. Habana Outpost invites you to dine on traditional Mexican and Cuban food while enjoying a classic film like “Grease” (August 18) in the courtyard.

 

Bonus

On the Waterfront: From the Ocean, Gantry Plaza State Park
For families in Long Island City can take in spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline while watching your favorite family movie every Thursday this month. Films include “Ice Age” (August 29) and “Life of Pi” (August 22).

Polaris Productions Theater Camp

<p>Kids will learn, rehearse, and perform the wonderful Maurice Sendak and Carole King musical, Really Rosie. For 10 weekdays, campers will take part in physical and vocal warm-ups and learn choreography, staging, and vocal parts. They’ll develop skills in acting, singing, character development, and more. This camp will ignite your child’s imagination and passion for performing, build their self-esteem, and help them form lasting friendships. They’ll have fun! At camp’s end, the kids will perform Really Rosie for family members and friends. Kids of all levels of experience, ages 8 through 13, are welcome to join.</p>
