Stop by your local Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop for a free cone on April 4.
I scream, you scream, we all scream for free ice cream!
Mark your calendars because Ben & Jerry’s just announced its global Free Cone Day. On Tuesday, April 4 from 12-8pm, Ben & Jerry’s lovers can wait on line for a free cone of their favorite flavor or try something new—no Fairtrade concoction is off limits.
Free Cone Day started in 1979 when co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield celebrated their first year in business in Burlington, VT. They decided to thank the community, who helped the fledgling business survive, by giving out free scoops. In 1993, Free Cone Day became a national celebration, and in 2000, Scoop Shops around the world joined in to make Free Cone Day a global event.
“We believe in having fun, and in thanking our fans with free ice cream for our anniversary every year,” said Ben & Jerry’s CEO Jostein Solheim in a press release. “Through the power of ice cream, we are able to form strong connections and create positive social change together. Free Cone Day is one way to show our fans how much we appreciate them.”
While last year’s Free Cone Day focused on raising awareness for climate justice, this year’s celebration is focused on fun and Fairtrade, a movement working to ensure that small-scale farmers in developing nations can succeed in the global marketplace. Ben & Jerry’s currently sources five Fairtrade Certified ingredients: sugar, cocoa, vanilla, coffee, and bananas, according to benjerry.com.
