Brooklyn Balloon Company offers party packages with unique balloon twisting.

Robert Moy started Brooklyn Balloon Company in October, but twisting balloons into chic shapes has been a hobby of his for quite some time. A designer by habit and trade, he has worked in graphic design, furniture and lighting design, photography, and jewelry. His wife is also a designer, prompting him to joke, “We’re a designer family.”

And it was his wife, or rather, her company holiday party, that was the impetus for Moy to start taking balloon twisting more seriously. “I’ve done some twisting in the past,” he explains. “I got a book when I was a little kid, but it was just a hobby.” There was a balloon twister at the holiday party and Moy’s 3-year-old son was so excited by the craft that Moy and his wife decided to hire a balloon twister for their child’s birthday party. And at that point, “it kind of hit me,” says Moy. “I thought: I could do something like that.”

Most balloon twisters do not come from a design background, which is where Moy thought he could make his mark as a unique artist. “I wanted to do something a little bit different, a little bit modern,” he says. He achieves that goal by producing over 100 shapes including Spiderman, the Hulk, Hello Kitty, and a man-sized pose-able T-Rex that is made up of 17 balloons. Moy is nonchalant about the inspiration for the giant dino: “Dinosaurs are one of my son’s favorite things, and I just wanted to make something really big that he would get excited about,” he says.

Moy offers party packages with themes ranging from Fairy to Superhero to Bugs, and travels to Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. He also offers deluxe balloon parties at Resobox in Long Island City. He plans to expand the business to include more large-scale designs, deliveries, and bouquets.
