Chiquita y Coqueta, a clothing line for girls founded in 2008 that features handmade pieces from Argentina, launched a new website earlier this year that allows U.S. buyers to purchase its products online. The store, which has a showroom on the Upper West Side, has a mission to bring simple, romantic designs to children’s clothing while still being stylish.
“You see a lot of children’s clothes looking like their parents, so we try to put design in the clothes without making them look like they are for adults,” says owner Sandra Abrams. Shopping at Chiquita y Coqueta does more than just style your child in handmade clothing, it helps give back. At the end of each year, the store gives 40 percent of its profits to a good cause. Last year the proceeds were given to a kindergarten in Argentina, which allowed the school to buy whatever supplies they needed.
Abrams states that she didn’t start the business just to bring in a profit for herself, but to do something for the people who make the clothes and for their communities. The online collection consists of summer and winter clothes, all handmade without harmful chemicals and with high-quality fabrics available on the market. From shirts and dresses, to fabric shoes and boots, Chiquita y Coqueta offers clothes that will not only bring joy to those who wear them, but to people of Argentina who made them.
