After undergoing a major renovation, Tompkins Square Park located at East 9th Street and Avenue A will reopen this Saturday, June 7 with a inaugural ribbon cutting ceremony taking place at 11 am.
The Playground Improvement Project Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will be co-hosted by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and New York Junior League, and will celebrate the work of the volunteers in improving and beautifying Tompkins Square Park. Children can join in on the celebration by not only enjoying the newly renovated park, but also participating in games and crafts while enjoying food, drinks, and entertainment.
Although the park was renovated in 1990, the new renovations aim to bring back much of the historical aspect of Tompkins Square that was lost during the previous renovations. This overhaul brought new life to the previously run-down park with its three staged plan for improvement. The first stage focused on rebuilding the perimeter, including improving fences, curbs, and pavements, followed by aesthetic improvements in the next stage.
Lastly, the outdoor fitness area has experienced improvements as well. Tompkins Square now joins the long list of lower Manhattan’s landmark parks and squares that have been reconstructed over the past twenty years.
