Halloween is still weeks away, but for my family the celebration started early when we went to the Count’s Halloween Spooktacular at Sesame Place. The theme park was decorated for the holiday and my kids enjoyed rides, mazes, trick-or-treating, a holiday-themed parade and seeing some of their favorite characters dressed in costumes. Even after watching Elmo walk around in a skeleton costume and Ernie wearing a pirate outfit, my 3-year-old son was still certain he wanted to dress up as a firefighter. One of the benefits of having a kid that age is that they can tell you what they want. Of course that’s not the case with his baby sister, so I’ve had fun researching costumes for her myself. These are some of my favorites for the 1 and under crowd, all of which can be purchased online.
Angry Birds. Given the explosive popularity of the Angry Birds video game, it’s no surprise it’s morphed into a Halloween costume as well. Your little avenger will stay toasty in this fleece one piece with velcro closures, which make it easy to change your child’s diaper. Just make sure any older siblings don’t build a slingshot! $30.
Curious George. This costume (my son’s first) is perfect for curious little ones who are always getting into everything. Long sleeves, covered feet and a hood with George’s face will help keep your child warm. Since the hood is attached you don’t have to worry about it getting lost. The bottom unsnaps easily if a diaper change is necessary. $18.
Football Player. My husband and I may not agree on whether our kids are going to be Jets or Patriots fans, but we do agree that this costume is a winner. Your baby will be warm and looking buff with padded sleeves and torso and a mini-helmet. Daddy won’t even regret missing Monday night football when he sees his little quarterback all dressed up! $25.
Little Red Riding Hood. Whether your daughter is going to visit Grandma or just go trick-or-treating at the neighbors, she’ll look great in this dress which includes a belt and of course Little Red Riding Hood’s signature red cape. You’ll have to supply the socks, shoes and your own basket for goodies. $22.
Tiny Tootsie Roll. On my son’s first Halloween, I saw this costume on another baby and made a mental note to remember it when I had a second child. With the classic Tootsie Roll shape complete with twisted ends, it’s warm and cozy enough for a long evening following an older sibling around. $25.
