Upper West Side college prep school Dwight School recently opened its athletic center in East Harlem. The school signed a long-term lease with 1199 Housing Corporation, owners of the East River Landing apartment complex, to refurbish an existing facility. The Dwight School Athletic Center is open to students and the residents of East River Landing and offers athletic classes and programs, including tennis, swim instruction, Zumba, and yoga.

Dwight School, an independent college preparatory school on the Upper West Side, opened its athletic center in June. The 40,000-square-foot athletic center features a six-lane indoor swimming pool, two rooftop tennis courts, and a high school gym.
“[The athletic center was established] for students and families, so everyone can find a sports or fitness avenue to enjoy and reach a different level personally,” says Mike Bailey, director of the Dwight School Athletic Center.
Instead of building a new athletic facility, Dwight School refurbished an existing community center after forging a partnership with 1199 Housing Corporation, owner of the East River Landing apartment complex, which owns the structure. Dwight students and the 6,500 residents of the East River Landing complex have free access to the athletic center. Tennis, swimming, aquatic aerobics, Zumba, and yoga classes are currently available to the public for a fee, and more programs will become available in coming months.
Dwight School Athletic Center is a 12-minute drive from the school’s Upper West Side campus.
