Prepare for an enchanted evening and go experience the one-of-a-kind Pixar in Concert. For the first time, Pixar presented a compilation of music and imagery from all 14 Pixar films, performed live by the world class New York Philharmonic’s full symphony orchestra. As Buzz Lightyear would say, it took me to “infinity and beyond!”
Speaking of Buzz, I entered Avery Fisher Hall and it was quite different: there was a giant, magic screen on the stage with a photo of Buzz Lightyear conducting an orchestra with words that Mommy told me said, “Pixar in Concert.” There were lots of little ones like me in the audience all dressed up with a lot of big adults, too.
I love music and animation just as much as any other toddler but words cannot describe this amazing concert. The marriage of hearing a live orchestra accompanying the big, magic screen captivated the audience of all ages and was purely magical. Even though there were no words spoken by some of my favorite Pixar friends, no one seemed to mind since music was the universal language.
From the “Toy Story” trilogy to the “Incredibles,” and from “Finding Nemo,” “Wall-E” and “UP” to “Monsters Inc.” and “Brave,” we enjoyed the compilation of songs into a flowing medley that effortlessly told the story for each movie highlight reel. As exciting and enjoyable as each adventure was, it was truly the live music that provoked deep thought and evoked my emotions. For example, the marriage montage from “UP” had everyone around me crying. It’s a good thing Mommy had tissues. And the James Bond-like music and feel of clips from the “Incredibles” had everyone at the edge of their seat. I almost fell off!
I also learned musical lessons from esteemed conductor David Newman and learned all about the rich music Newman family history. My favorite lesson was about spotting the movie. That means strategically deciding where music goes in, comes out, and where there is no music at all. I will be thinking about this each time I watch my Pixar favs and other great cartoons.
The emotion of great film music along with the fun of the films made everything poignant (that’s my fancy word for the week): “Pixar has given audiences of all ages some of the most touching and memorable moments in movie history” and I couldn’t agree more. Plus, with the magic screen and the NY Phil you can see Pixar like never before. So be sure not to miss the chance to see this unique concert as well as your favorite friends and find yourself singing along to “You’ve Got a Friend in Me!” at Pixar in Concert at Lincoln Center.
