A roundup of family-friendly restaurants in Howard Beach, Queens
Brothers Ravioli
161-16 Cross Bay Blvd.
718-843-7263
This family-run shop may be a take-out restaurant, but it’s still a staple in the community. From kid-friendly pastas (such as baked ziti) to chicken wraps, your child will get a taste of the finest ingredients.
Bruno’s Ristorante
58-22 Cross Bay Blvd.
718-322-7866
Remember the brick-oven pizza I was talking about? If you’re looking for a higher-end venue but you still want to order a delicious brick-oven pie for the kids, you can head over to Bruno’s. This fancy Italian eatery is great for celebrating milestones, such as birthdays and graduations. Don’t forget to try the Chocolate Decadence cake.
Cross Bay Diner
160-31 Cross Bay Blvd.
718-848-9401
When I was in elementary school my family used to go to Cross Bay Diner every few weekends for a delicious and homey breakfast. This family-oriented diner offers American and international dishes ranging from burgers to seafood. The best part (and your child will love this) is that breakfast is served all day! If your child is craving a short stack or Belgian waffles, he or she can choose from a variety of add-ons, such as eggs, bacon, whip cream, bananas, and more. All kid’s menu items include a small beverage and a choice of cake, ice cream pie, pudding, or cookie.
Gino’s
158-46 Cross Bay Blvd.
718-738-4113
If you are looking for a large selection in pizzas, this restaurant is the place for you. With a menu consisting of signature pies, mini pizzas, pasta entrees, and more, there’s something for everyone in the family. The mini pizzas are great for kids because they are not too small, but not too heavy. Need a couple of fresh pies for a birthday party or a movie night at home? Gino’s offers delivery and take-out options to meet your every need. I recommend the Fresh Mozzarella pizza. It’s my favorite!
Hagane Hibachi & Japanese Grill
161-02 Cross Bay Blvd.
718-835-8385
This cozy Japanese restaurant offers a great variety of hibachi-style meats, seafood, veggies, and more. Whether you are bringing the family here for lunch or dinner, you and your little ones will enjoy the fun fire tricks chefs do while preparing the food.
Nana’s Breakfast Nook
161-09 Cross Bay Blvd.
718-309-0316
Though this go-to brunch spot is temporarily closed, Nana’s Breakfast Nook is slated to reopen soon (check website for updates) with an expanded menu for the entire family. This place is known for its boutique breakfast experience and vast selection of egg dishes, but who knows what it will be like when it reopens. Let the kids be the judge of the new place.
Saffron Restaurant
161-50 Cross Bay Blvd.
347-392-4152
This Spanish-American eatery is known for its diverse appetizers, or tapas. Families can dine in and share the mac and cheese, Greek salad, or plantain nachos. Though the restaurant is a bit pricey, it is perfect for celebrating special occasions. Your child will love the sweetness of the brown sugar and cinnamon churros or flan—both are fan favorites!
