The sun is shining and the kids are playing–but that also means exposure to harmful UV rays. It can be hard to know which sunscreen is best–there are so many out there from which to choose. We found some of our favorites that provide full coverage and are safe for toddlers and kids. Unless absolutely necessary, babies under the age of six months should not wear sunscreen, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. If there is no way to protect them from the sun (shade, clothing), a very small amount may be applied to the face and backs of hands. It is best to talk with your doctor first, though.

Suntegrity Unscented Body Sunscreen SPF 30 received a #1 rating from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) for sunscreen safety, which means it contains low hazard ingredients. Formerly known as their baby sunscreen, this unscented, vegan sunscreen offers broad spectrum protection and contains 20% non-nano, uncoated zinc oxide. Its non-greasy texture makes application easy, and contains green tea and cucumber extracts to soothe sensitive skin.

The EWG also gave a #1 rating to California Baby Super Sensitive (No Fragrance) Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen. Recommended by allergists and dermatologists, this mineral-based, vegan sunscreen provides UVA-UVB broad spectrum protection and contains micronized titanium dioxide, which diffuses the harmful ultraviolet rays. For the eco-conscious, it contains organic and sustainably grown ingredients.

Another broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen with a #1 safety rating from the EWG, COOLA Baby SPF 50 Unscented Moisturizer is organic, with no chemicals or preservatives. It contains no nano-particles and the paraben-free formula packed with organic sunflower, avocado, and sesame seed oils help boost SPF and keep your child’s skin healthy.

The Honest Co. Sunscreen SPF 30. This non-toxic, non-whitening, non-nano sunscreen is safe for toddlers, kids, and adults. Zinc oxide provides broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection and the non-greasy formula makes it easy to apply to the kiddos. For the sensitive types, it’s hypoallergenic, gluten-free, paraben-free, fragrance and dye-free, and contains no synthetic chemicals. Disclaimer: although the website claims it is safe for babies under six months of age, talk with your doctor first.
