On May 23, the 2019 Doctors of Distinction ceremony recognized Philip J. McWhorter, M.D. of Greenwich Hospital. Dr. McWhorter was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award, a distinction for his dedication to mentoring up-and-coming surgeons as well as maintaining a high standard of quality throughout his 42-year career.
“At the end of the day, I don’t think anybody could think that being a physician isn’t the greatest profession of all and I want to thank all of those who allowed me to fall into it,” Dr. McWhorter says. “I feel blessed to have been at Greenwich Hospital for 42 years.”
Throughout his career, Dr. McWhorter has served in various leadership roles in the hospital. He has been on nearly every medical and administrative committee, was chief of staff for three years, and was on the board of trustees for nine years. He is currently the chief of surgery and has held that title since the ‘90s.
Outside of leadership positions within the hospital, Dr. McWhorter has also been dedicated to mentoring the next generation of surgeons on a person-to-person level. In fact, his son, Peter McWhorter, M.D., is a perfect example. He has followed in his father’s footsteps and is currently employed as a colorectal surgeon at Greenwich Hospital.
When asked to reflect on his career, Dr. McWhorter stated, “It’s not the cases that stand out, it’s the people I remember and how I interacted with them.”
Greenwich Hospital is located at 5 Perryridge Road in Greenwich, CT, and is a member of Yale New Haven Health. For more information, visit greenwichhospital.org or call 203-863-3000.
