I’m a big snacker. Crackers, cookies, cakes, crumpets–if it’s out in the open in an unsealed package, I’ll probably eat it (I’m also a big fan of alliteration). So when my editor asked me if I’d be interested in reviewing Bitsy’s Brainfood, a line of healthy cookies, I jumped at the chance.
Founded by two NYC-based moms, Alexandra Buckley Voris and Maggie Jones Patton, the idea behind the snacks is that smart minds are fed by “smart” food. So what is it about Bitsy’s Brainfood that makes it so smart? First of all, it’s chock full of omega 3 DHA, vitamins A, B12, B6, and D3, and folic acid–that’s the stuff that helps your hair stay shiny and your brain stay active, along with a slew of other benefits. The cookies are also a good source of calcium and iron, which are two key components in the growth and development of a child’s body. Made with organic wheat flower in a peanut-free facility, Bitsy’s Brainfood is about as organic and healthy as a snack food can get. But is it tasty?
Absolutely.
Bitsy’s Brainfood comes in four different flavors: Zucchini Gingerbread Carrot, Orange Chocolate Beet, Lemon Broccoli, and Sweet Potato Oatmeal Raisin. I tried all but the Zucchini Gingerbread Carrot. And by “tried” I mean ate the entire box in a matter of minutes. Lucky for me, each box is only two servings and range from 110-120 calories per serving. Each flavor had a unique taste that lived up to its description. The lemon was tart enough to mask the broccoli but not overwhelmingly so; the oatmeal raisin blended with sweet potato and was reminiscent of an oatmeal raisin cookie. With its zesty flavor and little bits of chocolate inside, my favorite box was the Orange Chocolate Beet. I’d recommend this flavor to any family looking for a healthy dessert alternative.
Another plus: Bitsy’s Brainfood is fun to eat. While many parents have spent their children’s formative years teaching them to not play with their food, Bitsy’s Brainfood knows that playing sometimes means learning and encourages the opposite. The crackers are shaped like letters, and the box features games like seeing how many words kids can spell with a handful of the smart snacks. The sticker that’s included is the cherry on top–with 26 different alphabet stickers to discover, kids get even more motivation to fill up on awesome and healthy snacks.
A treat that makes you smarter, tastes great, and only costs $2.49 a box? Seems like no-brainer to me.
