Holiday Fun: “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical!”

img_3177Get ready for a holly jolly good time atRudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical!” Rudolph flew to the Theater at Madison Square Garden just in time for the holiday season and I was completely mesmerized as my favorite holiday characters came to life on the stage right before my eyes.

Kids from 1-101 will love “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical!” The show began with a greeting from our host Snowman Sam. I never met a talking snowman before and he was the host with the most! Soon he was storytelling and we were meeting elves and reindeer and Santa, oh my! Snowman Sam embarked upon a magical, holiday journey with us, telling the story of how Rudolph became the famous reindeer who goes down in history! From the moment baby Rudolph was born until the grand finale, I was at the edge of my seat and filled with pure holiday delight! This interactive family show is full of holiday wonderment and cheer in each and every number.

The whole family will feel right at home in this nostalgic, winter wonderland. There are show-stopping costumes for excellent elves, fantastic furry animals, and Rudolph himself! There are amazingly adorable details like Rudolph’s reindeer face, sporty hooves and, of course, his glowing, shiny, red nose. They were all so cute I just wish I could hug all the elves, animals and reindeer! And the staging and special effects make you feel like you are right in the middle of the action.

There are lots of magical surprises and holiday happy endings. Even though I was sad at first when Rudolph couldn’t play in any reindeer games, Rudolph made fast friends with Hermey and the other misfits and had an enchanted adventure on the Island of Misfit Toys. Seeing the misfit toy characters from my favorite story coming to life on stage was just how I imagined it but even better. It’s pretty amazing. The show went on and brought all of my favorite scenes to life on stage in new ways! And the Abominable Snow Monster wasn’t even scary at all…actually by the end of the show my little sister thought he was cute.

From the cartoony North Pole to the Abominable Snow Monster’s cave, there is delightful detail in each and every scene and character. Plus, the special effects were spectacular. There was even real ice and snow when Santa was ready to go. And Rudolph began to fly and led the way and saved the day! Watching Rudolph and the reindeer flying across the theater is simply breathtaking! I wish I could fly!

Mommy loves that it’s a story of acceptance and acknowledgement of differences. The show encourages us to celebrate what makes everyone an individual (no one is a misfit!) and find beauty and strength in our differences. And I love the silly characters that Rudolph meets along the way and naturally, Rudolph and all his flying reindeer friends! The heartwarming holiday musical is sure to become a family tradition!

Belle da Costa Greene: A Librarian's Legacy

The Morgan Library & Museum will present a major exhibition devoted to the life and career of its inaugural director, Belle da Costa Greene (1879–1950). Widely recognized as an authority on illuminated manuscripts and deeply respected as a cultural heritage executive, Greene was one of the most prominent librarians in American history. The exhibition will trace Greene’s storied life, from her roots in a predominantly Black community in Washington, D.C., to her distinguished career at the helm of one of the world’s great research libraries. Through extraordinary objects―from medieval manuscripts and rare printed books to archival records and portraits―the exhibition will demonstrate the confidence and savvy Greene brought to her roles as librarian, scholar, curator, and cultural executive, and honor her enduring legacy.
