Like
a lot of parents, actress Jessica Alba had a kind of eco-awakening a few
years ago when she started doing research into the ingredients of some of the
common baby products she was using as a mom. Particularly helpful and
inspirational to her was the work of Christopher Gavigan, who wrote the
bestseller, Healthy Child Healthy World: Creating A Cleaner, Greener, Safer
Home, and who founded Healthy
Child Healthy World, a national nonprofit empowering parents to protect
their children from toxic risks. —
Fast forward to earlier this month, when Alba
and Gavigan debuted The Honest Company, which offers
parents just the kinds of products Jessica was looking for when she had her first
child: unquestionably safe, eco-friendly, convenient and affordable diapers,
wipes, bath/skincare and household cleaning products. (And given that one of the partners in their big green adventure is the founder of shoedazzle.com,
it’s not surprising that the product packaging is adorable,
too.)
Visit
Honest.com to see it all and sample the company’s amazing products. They’re offering a subscriber plan that
seems incredibly simple and smart: the products are curated into personalized bundles and
automatically shipped to parents every month. Moms and dads can try a free discover kit (i.e. a
sample pack of diapers and wipers, or trial-size versions of the bath, skin and
cleaning products).
In
the spirit of a company that is as much about doing well as it is about doing good, The
Honest Company intends to donate a percentage of earnings to relevant causes.
The main beneficiary right now is Baby2Baby, which supplies families in need with essential baby
clothing and gear, like baby diapers.
At a
press conference sponsored by Mom Trends, I was quite taken
with Jessica and Christopher and the effort they’ve put into making The Honest
Company not only worthy, but really worthwhile.
If
you’re concerned about toxic chemicals in the home, The Honest Company—along
with Gavigan’s book Health Child, Healthy World—is a great place to start.
