It’s Not Over Yet, Folks

With
July (almost) at an end, it seems as though the summer is on a non-stop
slip-and-slide back to reality. But not to worry, there is still plenty to do
and see before we bid these warm days and long nights Adieu. Here’s a round-up
of what’s on the radar (and under) for NYC families in the upcoming
August weeks. —

FESTIVALS

There
are still a ton of festivals
taking place all over the Northeast (any excuse to pack up the car and GO,
right?). Musikfest (August 5-14) in Pennsylvania is the place to be to
see live performances from teen pop mega stars Miranda Cosgrove and Nick Jonas.
New Hampshire is home to the Curious George Cottage
Family Festival (August 13-14) which will feature food (banana pancakes!), a
rocket launching and music from the Mango Groove Steel Band. Also, don’t forget
about The Great New York State Fair (August 25-September 5)—the state’s biggest
festival with competitions, a flower show and the music of Sara Bareilles,
Maroon 5 and Train.

CONCERTS

If
a concert
is what your kiddie is craving before the school season kicks off, there is a
plethora to choose from (and almost all are FREE!). Madison Square Park will welcome Moona Luna
(August 2) who will sing their kid-friendly Latin-inspired jams. On Thursday, August 11, Union Square Park caps off their summer series with off-Broadway songs from Imaginocean and the Voca People. Plus, Karen K and
the Jitterbugs (August 17) are coming to Brooklyn’s Carroll Park to perform such hits
as, “I Wanna Be a Jitterbug,” “Pancakes for Dinner,” and “Cross the Street.”

Belle da Costa Greene: A Librarian's Legacy

The Morgan Library & Museum will present a major exhibition devoted to the life and career of its inaugural director, Belle da Costa Greene (1879–1950). Widely recognized as an authority on illuminated manuscripts and deeply respected as a cultural heritage executive, Greene was one of the most prominent librarians in American history. The exhibition will trace Greene’s storied life, from her roots in a predominantly Black community in Washington, D.C., to her distinguished career at the helm of one of the world’s great research libraries. Through extraordinary objects―from medieval manuscripts and rare printed books to archival records and portraits―the exhibition will demonstrate the confidence and savvy Greene brought to her roles as librarian, scholar, curator, and cultural executive, and honor her enduring legacy.
