Kelly Clarkson–the original “American Idol” winner and beloved pop singer–wasn’t planning on writing a children’s book. The idea never even crossed her mind until she stayed up late one night while traveling, and documented all the real-life adventures her 1-year-old daughter, River, had already experienced at such a young age. Her husband was the one who told her she should turn it into a story for kids, and that is exactly what she did.
New York Family sat down to lunch for a Q&A between Clarkson and Good Housekeeping editor-in-chief, Jane Francisco. Clarkson gave all the inside details about her book, River Rose and the Magical Lullabies.
“Everything about this book was unplanned,” Clarkson says. “But because it was so organic, each step throughout the process has been so fun and easy.”
Released in early October, River Rose tells the story of an adventurous toddler and her canine sidekick, Joplin. The night before a trip to the zoo River can’t sleep, so her mom sings a lullaby and off River goes on an enchanting zoo escapade. The main character is a combination of River’s already-bubbly personality and Clarkson as child.
Published by Harper Collins and illustrated by Laura Hughes, the book is a well-put-together collaboration of poetry, illustration, and affection. Clarkson loves that the story is centered around a place that children of all economic backgrounds can enjoy: A zoo!
“The magical element is love; each story has its own place River and Joplin explore,” said Clarkson. “Everywhere they visit becomes magical.”
