On Sept. 8, secondary language learning center Lango Kids began its immersion preschool for children ages 2-4. Lango aims to teach social awareness of diversity through its introductory programs to languages and the cultures of the countries that speak those languages. Enrollment in morning toddler programs and after-school programs is still available for students younger than 8.
The immersion preschool program includes traditional pre-kindergarten courses, such as math and language arts, with an additional language component of either Spanish or Mandarin. This child-centered program is designed to alternate between sitting and standing activities and incorporates the secondary languages through story time, lessons, and activity challenges.
After-school programs are offered at the Lango main office and various schools in the area, including Poly Prep Lower School and PS 58. Spanish, Mandarin, and French after-school classes are offered Monday-Friday, from 3:30-6pm, and include snack time, free play, and homework help. Walking pick-up is available from PS 38, PS 261, PS 133, or any neighborhood school or bus stop. Registration is available online.
“There are benefits to learning a second language at a young age,” says Becky Lin, education director and teacher. “It helps consciousness development, and children are more flexible with their thinking. [Lango] is beyond teaching the language itself, but also teaching culture and enhancing areas of development.”
