Hunters Point is now home to a new library that features more than 50,000 books, gorgeous views of Manhattan, a minimalistic design, areas for kids and teens, Spanish and Chinese book collections, and more. The project was completed over the course of a decade and reportedly cost $40 million. It is the 217th library to open in the city, and one of several recent waterfront developments in Hunters Point. The building is 82 feet tall, but Curbed New York reports that once you’re inside, it feels much better. The roof features a terrace with stadium seating and more amazing views.
Like many libraries, this one has dedicated rooms and spaces for every member of the family–from kids to teens to adults–and everyone will be able to see one of the best Manhattan views that Queens has to offer. The library’s spaces have bamboo walls and ceilings and a neutral color palette that is calming and tranquil. The teen room has all the computers and comfy couches necessary to do homework or chill out, and the children’s room has stadium seating to accommodate school groups.
Curbed reports that a new library branch for this neighborhood was first proposed in 1999–but the city didn’t break ground on the project until more than 15 years later. However, despite the long wait, officials and residents have praised the end result. Dennis Walcott, the president of the Queens Public Library, called it a “community living room” where Hunters Point or Long Island City residents can call meetings, hang out, or even just read. And unlike other highly anticipated additions to the community, you don’t need tickets for this, and won’t need to wait in line. Head to the Hunters Point Library with the kids this weekend!
