Venture into the Lyons Den in TriBeCa for Power Cubs, their new 12-week yoga and mindfulness program for kids! This series is for children ages 3-5 and 6-9 years. (They will accept younger students if the parents believe they are ready.) Now through May 25, the group will meet twice a week for hour-long lessons.
Using games, songs, stories, and animated poses, Power Cubs makes yoga playful! “In Power Cubs we teach the tools and principles of yoga in a way that is fun and accessible to children,” explains Trista Krone, a yoga instructor and co-leader of the series.
The program distills the Baptiste-style yoga principles of a potent physical practice, meditation, and self-inquiry and makes them totally kid-friendly!
During class, kids will have the opportunity to exercise their muscles and their creativity as they move, sing, and play. Each class begins with an “Om Song” and ends with a “Namaste Song.” Classes will incorporate stretching and breathing exercises to teach children healthy body-awareness and relaxation techniques.

“We live in an incredibly fast-paced highly stimulating environment,” Krone says. “It’s really imperative that we provide special tools for children to manage and succeed in this environment.”
Relaxation techniques and focus exercises make yoga an invaluable practice for children. According to the Mayo Clinic, “doing regular yoga routines or meditation and relaxation techniques may help children relax and learn discipline, which may help them manage their symptoms of ADHD.”
The Mayo Clinic also claims that “yoga can be a gentle method for your child to get more physical activity and enhance their well-being.”
Krone also notes that other key benefits include: Developing a healthy body, nurturing strong self-confidence, and fostering positive social skills.
She said that an aim of a children’s yoga class “is to instill a value system to impart the skills needed so that kids can take this into every other part of their life.” The aim is to take these principles off the mat, onto the playground, and into classroom.
“Every human being has this unique potential, and with Power Cubs we are encouraging children to claim that potential early on so that they can grow into it and live into it throughout the rest of their lives!” Krone says.
