Mathnasium, which has more than 430 locations in the country, recently opened in Bay Ridge. The math-only learning center aims to help children understand math. “We teach math in a way that makes sense to [children],” says Robert Bernstein, master certified center director of the Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst locations. “We don’t teach just tips and tricks, we teach strategies and ways of doing things efficiently.”
Each child completes an assessment so Bernstein can figure out their strengths and weaknesses in math for their ages. Bernstein creates a customized learning plan—no two students have the same learning plan—and students are tested every two months so parents can see the child’s progress. Students work on their individualized plans in small groups of two to three students per instructor and can get help with their math homework as well as prep for tests, such as the Regents exam, state tests, or the SAT.
Bernstein says the instructors at Mathnasium don’t teach for a grade. “Although we want kids to get good grades, we want them to understand the math because it will stay with them for the rest of their life,” he says. “Math builds on itself. If you have trouble in one grade and you don’t remedy the issues and get a strong foundation, you’re going to have trouble in future grades.”
