Metrokids Preschool has opened a new location in Bayside. The school, which has locations throughout New York City, will officially open March 1 and is for children ages 3 months to 5 years old. The Queens preschool follows a creative curriculum that teaches children art, reading, yoga, and more.
With the city—and Queens specifically—being one of the most culturally diverse areas in the country, one stand-out feature of all Metrokids schools is that it teaches a foreign language at each of its locations. Mandarin is part of the lesson plan in Bayside. Each morning, the students receive their regular instruction in English, followed by lessons in foreign language in the afternoon. The students get an introduction to Mandarin by learning basic words through story time, singalongs and puppetry.
“The students really take to it,” says Sabrina Kroski, the school’s director of education. “The teachers are great at making it fun for them. It’s very interactive.”
Mandarin was chosen to part of the school’s bi-lingual curriculum based on a need within the community.
“We have a lot of parents and grandparents in the area who want their children and grandchildren to develop a second language,” says Kroski.
Students do not have to know how to speak Mandarin when they enroll.
The new facility;s dedicated library is where art and reading programs take place. The school also has a gym area with panoramic windows that bring in lots of natural light and an attached rooftop outdoor area for play in nice weather.
Registration is now open. More information is available on the website.
