From June 25 through September 13, experience the show that will have you captivated by its music, choreography, and storyline.
Based on the 1988 Disney film, the characters of Mulan come to life through a 14-scene show. Watch as Mulan, a Chinese peasant girl, does not back down when times get rough. Hiding that she was a girl, she dresses as a man to take the place of her sick father as a soldier in war. The themes shown in Mulan are still significant in today’s world.
“It’s message of bravery, leadership, loyalty and the importance of family,” Zhou Li, director of Mulan, said.
The excitement that this show brings has a great deal to do with the 12-member Red Poppy Ladies. The Red Poppy Ladies use their hands and sticks to bang on tub drums, tables, and the floor. The group has been together since 2000 and has been around the world performing, including at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Mulan is being performed at The Ellen Stewart Theatre at La Mama (66 East 4th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenue). Tickets start at $25. Students receive a discount of 20% and your first child is free, any additional children are 50% off! You won’t want to miss out on the limited time performance!
Along with the returning cast, the director and choreographer, Zhou Li, is back and had a few words to say about Mulan returning and what audiences can expect from the improved show!
Q: Are you excited to be back?
A: Of course! Coming back isn’t really easy. Our performance is not only a couple of weeks long, but it’s over 2 ½ months. Performing takes a lot of preparation, time, money and energy, but we’re excited!
Q: What is your favorite part about the ancient story of Mulan?
A: We want to put the ancient form into the modern understanding.
Q: What makes this a family musical?
A: The drums are strong and they attract children, while the exciting songs and beat will bring in middle-aged people. I think they can all get something from it.
Q: How was it reuniting with the cast? How was it working with the Red Poppy Ladies?
A: It’s not easy work because our performers are real drummers, but for our show we have to do different things like dancing and martial arts. It’s good for our group that they are strong drummers, and Mulan is the story of a strong girl.
Q: What can the audience expect from this performance?
A: First of all, the audience can learn pretty early about the Chinese drumming techniques and traditions. The show shows people how to be brave, how to be kind to their family, how to be confident of themselves, and also how to be strong. I think the story has a very nice meaning.
