Shall we
call her Sally or Pam? How about Mamy or just Mam? The American Museum of
Natural History invites kids of all ages to submit suggestions for a chance to name
its newest resident, the Mamenchisaurus hochuanensis—one of the world’s
largest dinosaurs. —
An
18-year-old vegetarian with a 30-foot-long neck, Mamenchisaurus is one of the
biggest creatures to have ever roamed the earth! She recently arrived at the American Museum of Natural History as part of The World’s Largest Dinosaurs exhibition.
Like most
teens, Mamenchisaurus loves to update her Twitter daily @Giant_Dino—that is, when she’s
not chowing down on thousands of pounds of food. At 13 tons, she needs to eat over
1,000 pounds of food each day to survive. So think of a good nickname (just
don’t call her chubby!), and submit your dino-mite idea to the Museum.
Submissions
are being accepted through Wednesday, May 25. Three finalists will win a giant (of
course) dinosaur prize package including copies of Inside Dinosaurs and ABC Dinosaurs, four tickets
to the exhibition, and a Mamenchisaurus Woodcraft Construction Kit, and one winner will receive an iPod touch. The winning
name of Mamenchisaurus will be announced on June 7.
