Kids will soon be able to get up close and personal with Spongebob, Dora, and the rest of their Nickelodeon faves when Nickelodeon Universe—the largest indoor theme park on the continent—opens in New Jersey in 2018, according to WPIX.
Nickelodeon is joining with Triple Five Group of Companies to develop the 8.5 acre park, which will feature rides and attractions featuring Nickelodeon characters including SpongeBob and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It will be a part of the massive American Dream Complex at the Meadowlands, a 3 million foot shopping and recreation center that will also feature more than 450 stores, a 16-story Big Indoor Ski & Snow Park, a 1,500 seat theater, an aquarium, an ice rink and a miniature golf course.
Triple Five and Nickelodeon have worked together before, opening a Nickelodeon Universe at the Mall of America in Minnesota. Triple Five is also partnering with DreamWorks on a water park at American Dream featuring characters from films like “Shrek,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” and “Kung Fu Panda.”
“Based on the success we have seen with Nickelodeon Universe at Mall of America we are excited to bring the number one entertainment brand for kids to American Dream,” said Triple Five President Don Ghermezian.
American Dream Meadowlands was scheduled to open in 2017, but is now scheduled to open in 2018 because of issues financing the project. Triple Five hopes to secure $2.7 billion in financing, including $1.15 billion in public bonds, by the end of September to resume construction on the project.
