The annual Summer Streets event is already in full swing this year with the biggest expansion so far in its history. Nearly 20 miles of NYC streets will be open for pedestrians to walk, cycle, and experience what the big city looks like without all the traffic.

The event encourages New Yorkers to explore more sustainable methods of transportation along with healthy recreational activities.

“The hottest block party in the nation” spans all five boroughs across five Saturdays from July 27 through August 24. Dozens of family-friendly activities will be available each day, including various arts and crafts, rock-climbing walls, hula hooping, chess tournaments, photography workshops, book fairs, and many, many more.

And we can’t forget all the free food and beverage samples courtesy of NYC’s finest authentic cuisine! For a complete guide to activities, visit here. Rest stops will also be available throughout the event.

In addition, Citi Bike will offer free day passes for all riders to enjoy unlimited 30-minute rides on a classic Citi Bike during Summer Streets. To redeem, enter promo code CITISUMMER24! on the “Daypass” tab of the Citi Bike app.

Bigger and Better

More than half a million people each year participate in Summer Streets, and with this year’s expansion, expect to see even more visitors roaming the streets. The development comes as an introduction to the city’s “Summer of Possibility,” a celebration of a safer, more prosperous New York.

Spanning almost 20 miles of city streets, 2024’s event is not just bigger, but longer. Streets will be open and car-free for pedestrians and cyclists for eight hours each Saturday (from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM), boasting a 33 percent expansion from previous years! Last year marked the first time Summer Streets spanned all five boroughs, and it looks like that upgrade is here to stay.

“Summer Streets shows New Yorkers how joyful and pleasant our streets become when we reallocate just a portion of our roads for people to stroll, bike, and play,” said Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez in a statement.
