Once Upon A Child, the largest children’s resale franchise in North America, in Seaford is now under new ownership. Michael Teller stepped into the role of president on December 21.
Once Upon A Child buys and sells gently used children’s clothing, gear, and apparel at up to 70% off the original retail price. The list of accepted items ranges from children’s costumes and kitchen sets to strollers and bed rails and can vary depending on the season and time of year. In exchange for their items, parents can elect to either receive cash immediately or trade in for store apparel at a tax-exempt price.
Each Once Upon A Child franchise is independently owned, but the overarching mission to buy and sell high-quality items to families at affordable prices remains consistent across the board.
“Our mission statement has always been that in an economy where every dollar counts, we keep your dollar in your pocket,” says Teller. For the past three months, he has focused on ensuring an influx of such high-quality items by adhering to the Seaford business plan. Teller prefers to purchase and sell primarily name brand clothing in near perfect conditions. He stresses how important this can be for low-income parents, especially when they prepare to send their children to school.
“We give lower income families the opportunity to dress their children in name-brand clothing,” says Teller.
Currently, Teller is formulating strategies for future expansion. Potential plans include adding to the now-1,600-square feet Seaford store, or acquiring a second location. A final decision will be made by the end of the year.
The Seaford store is currently seeking boys’ and girls’ summer and winter clothing in sizes 0-3 months up to size 14 as well as swimwear, footwear, and all child-related toys and equipment. An appointment is not required to make a sale.
