Portledge School’s summer program in Locust Valley is launching a Career Pathways division and adding science, arts, and sports classes.
Portledge Summer Adventures, a seven-week program, offers week-long sessions that aim to introduce children from pre-nursery through 12th grade to different careers and interests. This summer the Locust Valley-based program will partner with Bricks 4 Kidz, Sciensational Science, Madd Potter, Future Scientist, and Global Villages, along with Portledge teachers, to offer classes and activities in AP Prep, study skills, robotics, Legos, geology, and more.
Portledge Summer Adventures will be launching the Career Pathways division, through which students can gain hands-on experience in sports medicine, fashion and design, or the marine industry.
Students will learn about sports medicine through a partnership with Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola. Members of the sports medicine department will teach students about anatomy, etiology of sports injuries, and more. This new, three-day course in sports medicine will take place in the hospital, giving students a real-life experience.
For fashion and design, students will learn from Stacey Saltzman, Senior Fashion Designer for Tommy Hilfiger Girls. Students will not only learn how to sketch, research trends, and put designs on paper, but also will visit fabric stores, fashion design businesses, and a fashion museum in New York.
The Career Pathways program will offer two classes related to the marine industry. The SeaPerch robotics class will give students the opportunity to make underwater robots at the Webb Institute in Glen Cove, which specializes in navel architecture and marine engineering. There will also be a class led by U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Captain Cynthia Robson about navigation, boat handling, and seamanship. Other topics covered will be safety emergency response, environmental conservation, and marine animal protection.
