The Red Bulls, New York’s only professional soccer team, kick-started an initiative to energize soccer programs and camps throughout the five boroughs. The “New York’s Got Wings” campaign works to support soccer aficionados in New York by giving donations of equipment, clinics, and top-level coaching. From the soccer stars playing in city-run summer camps to the next World-Cup winners training in the local sports clubs, soccer programs all over NY will receive assistance from the Red Bulls.
In addition to these donations, the Red Bulls will make $1,000 donations (up to $30,000) to the New York City Parks & Recreation Department’s Summer Camp Program for each goal scored during the team’s 2011 regular season. The program, which runs 22 citywide camps for children and teens ages 6-13, offers fitness and sports activities in addition to trips, team building exercises, and computer and technology instruction.
The generosity continues throughout the team’s 34-game regular season. The Red Bulls’ season will be divided into five segments consisting of about seven games. Each borough is assigned a block of games during which the public will vote for the area soccer club that should be recipient of $10,000 worth of equipment and a clinic on their home field. The voting block for the Queens soccer club winner is open through April 30.
By sponsoring this initiative, the hope is that more children will take up the sport, creating a healthier and more fit lifestyle. For more information on the program, each borough’s voting, and the goal count, visit www.redbullusa.com/newyorksgotwings.
