Babies grow fast and often don’t get much, if any use out of any one given outfit. That’s what makes used clothing an attractive option. Not only is it pretty easy to find outfits that are in ‘like new’ condition, but they also cost much less. Here are some of my favorite places in the city that offer decent and stylish selections (some sell maternity clothes and baby gear as well).
Clementine. This trendy consignment shop carries children’s and maternity clothes in luxury brands such as Oilily, Bonpoint, Petit Bateau, Liz Lange Collection and Isabella Oliver. 39 Washington Square South, 212-228-9333.
Jane’s Exchange. More than just a consignment store, Jane’s Exchange is community hub where parents from the East Village and beyond come together. Their inventory includes used children’s, maternity, and nursing clothes, as well as baby gear and toys. 191 East 3rd Street, 212-677-0380.
Flying Squirrel. Founded by a mom who originally wanted to dispose of her twins’ old exersaucers in an environmentally sound way, the store is now a favorite among Brooklyn parents, selling new and gently worn clothes, toys, books, gear, and more. 96 North 6th Street, Brooklyn, 718-218-7775.
Lulu’s Then and Now. At Lulu’s in Park Slope, you can trade in the clothes your child has outgrown for 40% of their value in store credit toward clothes that fit. 75A 5th Ave., Brooklyn, 718-398-LuLu.
Monk’s Trunk. This whimsical shop sells gently used children’s clothing (sizes 0 to 8), as well as toys and books. They heat treat all their clothes and, if you’re interested in selling any, they pay up in cash—up to 60% of an item’s value. 23 Hawthorne Street, Brooklyn, 718-398-9324.
