In the city that never sleeps, sweet sounds from Sing for Hope Pianos will be heard all day long throughout the city. All around NYC, 88 pianos are placed in parks and other public spaces for all ages to take to and enjoy–how fun! Aside from mini-concerts performed by volunteer musicians, families and friends are welcome to play or enjoy the music for free.
Each of the 88 pianos, symbolic of 88 keys on a piano, has been designed by a different local artist–so a unique flavor of art is brought to life with each piano. Founded in 2006, Sing for Hope has been bringing pianos to New York City streets for three years in its “art for all” initiative.
After their summer run, the pianos will be donated to schools, hospitals, and other organizations throughout NYC. Over 1,000 Sing for Hope volunteer artists will participate in year-round programs in hopes that the pianos will continue to bring music, art, and joy to communities.
For now, you have until Sunday, June 16 to take your family to locations in all five boroughs and bang on the keyboard to your hearts’ content. So whether you’re a natural, want to learn, or just like to listen, head out to Central Park, Coney Island, Joyce Kilmer Park, and more to find a piano that helps bring out the music in you.
