Everyone’s favorite porous pineapple dweller is bringing all of Bikini Bottom to the stage. With a world premiere set for 2016 in Chicago, fans can expect a SpongeBob SquarePants musical on Broadway in NYC for the 2016-2017 season.
SpongeBob SquarePants, the pint-sized sponge who took the world – and Nickelodeon ratings – by storm, is bringing his underwater world of Bikini Bottom, plus his crew of aquatic friends to Broadway for the 2016-2017 season.
The musical, directed by Tina Landau, will premiere for a limited engagement at Chicago’s Oriental Theater from June 7-July 3, 2016. After its midwestern run, the spongey show will transfer to Broadway.
With a book by Kyle Jarrow and music supervision by Tom Kitt, the SpongeBob production will feature original songs from big name collaborators, including Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, David Bowie, Lady Antebellum, and more.
While details are still under wraps, we’re hoping to see SpongeBob joined on stage with familiar faces like Patrick, Squidward, Sandy, Gary, and the evil Mr. Plankton.
Casting has not yet been anounced for the musical.
