Kathleen Schneck started as St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy’s principal in August and has launched several initiatives including Coding Club at the school.
As the educational leader of the school, which has approximately 225 students from grades pre-K 3 to eighth grade, Schneck’s main responsibilities include making sure instruction is at its fullest compliance and teachers are using all the resources they have available.
One of Schneck’s biggest initiatives is incorporating technology, including the use of Google Classroom in the fifth to eighth grades. She also started Coding Club, during which students learn how to write code by playing games.
“There are different languages that code can be written in, and the students are doing things to get exposure to that, helping them in STEM initiatives,” Schneck says. “It’s really the way the world is going, especially job-wise.”
Schneck also works with staff and students on ongoing projects that help the school engage with the community. For example, children in the fourth grade work with T.E.A.L (Tell Every Amazing Lady), a neighborhood nonprofit that raises awareness about ovarian cancer, by bringing in pennies throughout the year to raise funds for the organization. Students also collected blankets and other materials recently to give to the Sean Casey Animal Rescue in Windsor Terrace.
Schneck, who previously worked at a school in Queens, is enjoying her job and working in Brooklyn.
“I think it’s great. The community has been so welcoming. I think that’s helped this be an easy transition for me. Also I went to a Catholic high school on Long Island so it’s kind of bringing me back to my roots,” Schneck says.
St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy is scheduled to host an open house on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018 from 11:30am-1:30pm. During the open house, the public will have a chance to meet faculty members, tour the school, and ask questions.
