Baseball fans and members of the Alzheimer’s community united in the battle against Alzheimer’s disease during Alzheimer’s Awareness Night with the Staten Island Yankees at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Friday, June 17, as the Staten Island Yankees took on the Brooklyn Cyclones. About 100 people took part in the fundraising event, which raised $3,000 to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association, New York City Chapter.
The mission of the Alzheimer’s Association, New York City Chapter is to create and promote comprehensive and humane care for persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, to provide support for their families and professional caregivers, and to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research.
“The sight of baseball fans, young and old, uniting to help put an end to Alzheimer’s disease was inspiring,” says Lou-Ellen Barkan, president and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association, New York City Chapter. And although the Yanks ceded to the Cyclones, with a 5-3 final score, “They are still winners in our eyes,” Barkan says.
The night ended with a post-game fireworks show, and all kids ages 12 and under were invited down to the field to take a turn around the bases.
