Summer Hot Spot: Long Beach

Long Beach, located on Long Island, is a hot spot for families to visit during the summer. Hurricane Sandy hit Long Beach hard, but that didn’t stop it from thriving! Close enough to NYC that you can plan a day trip there this summer. Take part in the laid back atmosphere and enjoy the food, activities, and of course the beach!

Let’s start off with food because, let’s be honest, it’s the most important part! Gino’s Pizza is the best in town! You can grab a slice and walk around or dine in and enjoy all of their delicious entrees. Not in the mood for Italian? Head on over to The Bungalow for wraps, paninis, sandwiches, and salads. They also have delicious juices and smoothies! Last summer Shoregasboard was introduced to Long Beachers and it’s back again! Food vendors are stationed around the boardwalk with an abundance of yummy foods that beach-goers won’t need to walk far to get to.

For those with a sweet tooth, you’re definitely going to want to check out Marvel. Nothing beats an ice cream cone on a hot summers day! Marvel’s soft serve ice cream is a fan favorite around Long Island for over 50 years!

The boardwalk (which was rebuilt after Hurricane Sandy) and the beach are what attract a lot of families to Long Beach but that’s not all that this place has to offer. The Magnolia Playground is open and ready to play on! A non-profit organization, Kaboom, and JetBlue airways, along with 200 Long Beach volunteers, sponsored the rebuilding of the playground. Your children will love the new equipment on this playground that is located right off of the boardwalk.

A new activity in Long Beach this summer is Barefoot Mini Golf! (How cool does that sound?) The 18-hole course is built on the sand and is open seven days a week from noon to 9pm. See who will be the next Phil Mickelson of your family!

For those looking to take up a new hobby, Long Beach offers surfing and trapeze classes. The surfing classes are taught through Skudin Surf. Here you can learn the basic skills of surfing or advance in your surfing skills. They offer weekend group lessons (ages 15 and up), private lessons, kids surf camp (ages 5-16) and more! Don’t just watch the surfers in the water take part in the action!

Thrill seekers will want to sign right up for Trapeze school through I.Fly. The first part of class is the introduction of techniques that is taught on the ground. Once you get those down pat you get to fly through the air! Check the schedule for a time that works for you!

Long Beach is a great place to visit during the summer. Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and relax on the beach with your family!
