If your expecting twins, here are 5 things that should be on your to-do list. —
Take a nap. I love when moms say, “I’m only 20 weeks pregnant, why am I so tired?” I look at them and answer: “You are aware that you are growing two humans in there, right?” Yes, we are superwomen, but creating a life (much less two lives) takes a lot out of you.—There are no remedies for fatigue; just rest as much as you can, whenever you need to. If that means putting your head on your desk after lunch, go for it. Pretend you are in second grade again and it’s nap time. Embrace and accept that you need the rest and you’ll feel better already.
Make room for the babies. Clean out some closets, drawers, and space in the kitchen and bathroom. These little monkeys on the way are not going to need room for just a crib, but space in almost all the rooms in your home. You’ll need kitchen storage for bottles and later spoons, dishes and sippy cups. The bathroom will need a spot cleared for baby shampoo, a baby tub, and a slew of bath toys (which only multiply as they get older). If you are too overwhelmed, consider calling in the pros. The folks at Sweet Pea Baby Planners or even a home organizer can help get your home baby-ready.
Get informed about parenting in the city. Join the Manhattan Twins Club, take a Twiniversity class, or talk to other parents to find out what isn’t covered in books. Like, how do you get to the Bronx Zoo from Tribeca on the subway with twins in tow? Or, which restaurants in your neighborhood can easily accommodate a double stroller? Our city is filled with local resources, so use them!
Get all your legal ducks in a row. This is a must-do for an expectant mom. No one likes to think about it, but preparing a will, life insurance and perhaps even disability insurance is a necessity for any parent. You have some big responsibilities on the way. Make sure they are taken care of no matter what. If you’re looking for a financial adviser, consider Strategies for Wealth, a New York City-based firm who helped my family and many others I know arrange life insurance.
Fall in love again. Finding the best parts of your partner again (hey, keep it clean folks!) will give you a chance to reconnect, relax and fall in love all over again. Visit the restaurant where you had your first date, re-read your wedding vows on a random night, or share a bowl of ice cream over candlelight. Having a healthy and strong marriage will help your children in the long run.
