If you love wintertime sports, don’t let the season go by without a day of snow tubing. Similar to sledding, tubing is a fun-for-the-whole-family winter activity. You don’t need expensive equipment or special training — just warm, waterproof clothing and a sense of adventure. We’re lucky to have some of the best hills for tubing right in our own backyard. If we’ve had a plentiful snowfall, Central Park’s Pilgrim Hill and Cedar Hill both offer exhilarating tubing runs, and Brooklyn has great tubing hills near the Nethermead area in Prospect Park.
If you’re looking for more adventurous tubing and a fun day trip, try one of the family-friendly snow sport areas less than two hours from New York City.
Tuxedo Ridge (Tuxedo, NY): A one-hour drive from the city, it’s the closest snow park in the area, offering five tubing runs and lift service. tuxedoridge.com
Mountain Creek (Vernon, NJ): About 75 minutes from NYC, the Drop Zone at Mountain Creek is one of the largest tubing parks in the area. There are 30 chutes for tubers of all ages, but the little ones must be at least 5 years old and 42 inches tall. mountaincreek.com
Woodbury Ski Area (Woodbury, CT): Three different tubing parks, four lifts, and 20 different courses. Offers single and family-size tubes, and just under two hours from NYC. woodburyskiarea.com
