VivaEve offers non-surgical Uterine Fibroid Embolization to treat uterine fibroid tumors and adenomyosis.
VivaEve, a company that specializes in Uterine Fibroid Embolization, has its main office in Forest Hills and opened its surgical center in Astoria in October 2016. UFE is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure performed by a board-certified interventional radiologist that treats fibroid tumors in the uterus. The procedure is performed while the patient is conscious or minimally sedated, but feeling no pain, says Olga Chernin, operations manager. It does not require general anesthesia.
For UFE, the patient is given local anesthesia to numb the area (the wrist or the groin) where the interventional radiologist will make a small incision. Then, using real-time imaging, the catheter is guided through an artery, and the interventional radiologist locates the blood supply of the fibroid tumors using X-ray images. Miniscule particles (the size of grains of sand) are then injected into the uterine arteries supplying the fibroid (without affecting the blood flow to the rest of the uterus). This blocks the blood flow to the fibroid tumors, which causes them to shrink and die.
The whole procedure typically takes 1 hour, and in-office recovery time is approximately 2-3 hours, then they’re ready to go home, Chernin says. “We’re a company that provides round-trip transportation. We pick them up from their home and drop them back off after the procedure,” she adds. “We’re a company that pays special attention to the patients.”
The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend Uterine Fibroid Embolization as a safe and effective procedure, and VivaEve’s surgical center is certified by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities. In addition, the interventional radiologist and anesthesiologists at VivaEve are board-certified.
