Weekend Planner August 26-28

Saying goodbye to summer is hard, but this weekend has plenty of events that will help you bid
farewell in style!
So whether you’re getting supplies at the Hester Street Fair,
watching pros play before the U.S. Open at Arthur Ashe Kids Day, or munching on
delicious new food at Taste of Brooklyn, this weekend celebrates kids and the season
they love most. —

Start off the weekend
with an Anthony Bourdain-style culinary experience. Munchkin gourmands don’t have to
travel far to try out multicultural cuisine – just head to Taste
of Brooklyn at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum
to learn to make (and try!)
delights like hummus and Mexican dishes. Events happening all weekend long!

Continue eating while
getting everyone ready for school at the kiddie remix of the Hester
Street Fair
. This Saturday, the weekly fair will feature unique
back-to-school supplies from local businesses plus kid-friendly artisanal
treats like mini Dutch pancakes with sprinkles. Meanwhile, little athletes can
let out some energy and get ready for the U.S. Open at Arthur
Ashe Kids Day
(THIS EVENT IS NOW CANCELLED). Enjoy free tennis workshops and games in the morning and
check out just-for-fun exhibition matches between pros in the afternoon.

Get tykes ready for
history class with a reenactment of a battle that took place in our very own
city. It’s the 235th Anniversary of the American Revolution’s Battle of Brooklyn (THIS EVENT IS NOW CANCELLED), and Revolutionary War re-enactors
are making it come alive at Green-Wood cemetery. There will also be historical
trolley rides, a parade and a commemorative ceremony.

Speaking of history,
introduce little film lovers to silent movies with screenings of Charlie
Chaplin classics at Symphony Space. They’ll be showing The
Kid and A Dog’s Life
in
high-definition. Tots will laugh at the antics of a six-year-old and a scruffy
pooch even without sound in these black and white flicks.
