Some kids dig poetry,
others love science – and a few get stoked about both! Whether your little
one loves to bike or sculpt down by the shore, there’s something for everyone over the next few days. —
If you’ve ever
suspected that your child might be a mad scientist, be sure to take her to the
New York Hall of Science this weekend for Maker
Days. Kids will put their scientific curiosity to work as they make their
own inventions with the help of the NYSCI Explainers. Don’t be shy – they can piece together
everything for mom and dad, too.
For more hands-on fun, head to
Coney Island on Saturday for the annual Sand
Sculpting Contest. Admire (and be full-on inspired) as pros and amateurs put their pails
to work to create sand creatures and castles. Participate or just wander around
and people watch – with folks dressed as mermaids and cartoon characters, there
will be plenty to see.
There’s more outdoor
fun to be had when pedestrians and bicyclists (and flocks of families!) take over Manhattan for the Saturday kick-off of Summer
Streets. A route between the Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park will be
closed to vehicles from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., leaving the streets clear for
wandering, exercising and enjoying a sprightly, summer day. There are also rest stops
throughout the route for food, bike repair and fun activities.
Finally, whether you
love Robert Frost or you’re more of a Dr. Seuss kind of verse-er, readers of
all ages will adore a special tribute to favorite author Shel
Silverstein. Enjoy readings of his work from actors, musicians and even
celebrity special guests at the Shelebration
in Central Park.
