Weekend Planner June 3-5

With a science-skewed
extravaganza and creativity galore—the whole family will be using BOTH sides of
their brains this weekend. Check out all the cool events going on around town! —

Bring budding scientists
to the many events (both indoor and outdoor) of this year’s World
Science Festival
, or teach non-scientifically inclined kids that it isn’t
all just microscopes and science fair projects. The big family day is Sunday,
in the newly renovated Washington Square Park, where kids can take part in over 30 activities.

Meanwhile, children will love
the annual Howl!
Festival
, inspired by famous Beat poet Allen Ginsberg. Enjoy carnival
games, storytelling, theater workshops, dance and more in Tompkins Square Park. Festivities start at noon on both Saturday and Sunday.

To take in a different
kind of talent, watch old-fashioned circus performances sea-side at Showboat
Shazzam
in Red Hook. Jugglers, dancers and other circus folks will perform
aboard Captain David Sharp’s historical Lehigh Valley No. 79 ship this month.

THE MUSIC IN YOU

BYOK—bring your own kid—to
the 92Y
Tribeca’s family-friendly music series.
This month starts with “Gustafer
Yellowgold,” who adds a cool multimedia twist to his original story-songs.

Young
music fans will also enjoy the Latin and Afro-Caribbean beats of popular
children’s band Hot
Peas ‘N Butter
at a free concert in Flushing on Saturday. Don’t
worry, kids, actual peas will not be served.

If
you want to introduce your family to world of jazz, head to Lincoln
Center’s Jazz & Popular Song Family Concert
. Your tots will be tapping
their feet to Duke Ellington in no time.
