It’s a super cool weekend to be young in NYC! Check out our list below for how to soak up global cultures with kids in tow by the likes of family fests, art and music. (And okay, admit it, who already has their tickets to see the Hunger Games?). —
FRIDAY-SUNDAY
Dive right into an adventure
of
talking dragons at the NYU Skirball Center, where the
fantasy-driven tale of The Neverending
Story will delight all weekend long.
FRIDAY
Bring your Project Runway hopeful to the Children’s Museum of the Arts for
a special textiles program. Kids can create their own fabric!
SATURDAY-SUNDAY
Gearing up for springtime
and Easter, the city is already hosting two eggstravaganzas. On Saturday, hunt
throughout the entire Brooklyn Children’s Museum (just be sure to
pre-register!). On Sunday learn all about eggs before you find them at the
Staten Island Zoo.
SATURDAY
Put on that fancy tutu and head to Barnes
& Noble Tribeca for a reading of Fancy
Nancy and the Mermaid Ballet, the newest book in the fancy series.
Kids can experience the
diverse culture of the Eastern Mediterranean at the Met’s Byzantium and Islam Festival,
especially focused for families, which will feature music and art projects—like
a giant mosaic.
Did you know that Helsinki
is the
world design capital for 2012? To celebrate, The Scandinavia House is hosting a
Design Your Own City Block workshop where kids can think up urban designs built around bike lanes and playgrounds.
Girl power! Check out the Nimbaya!
performance at Symphony Space to see an all-female West African troupe dance
and play the djembe, a percussion-like instrument that is usually reserved for
males.
Cruise on over to Book Court General
Books in Brooklyn for a reading and signing with illustrator Scott Menchin for
his new book, Riding In My Car, based on the Woody Guthrie track. P.S.
Don’t miss the giveaway above!
Celebrate 25 years of
magic
at The Disney Store with their Stickermania
and Storytelling event.
The Scholastic Store is
holding
a Hunger Games Movie Release Party,
where you can get your own airbrushed Mockingjay tattoo and participate in
trivia. May the odds be in your favor!
SUNDAY
Head downtown
to J&R Jr. for their free March Music Madness Festival featuring Suzi Shelton, The
Z Brothers and Jon Samson.
It’s time to dance up a
storm
with Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights at The JCC. The concert will
feature songs from their newest album, What
a Zoo!: A Tribute to All Things Animals.
New York City kids unite at The Gotham Comedy Club for Kids ‘N
Comedy’s The New York Show, featuring
young comedians slinging jokes about growing up in the Big Apple.
Monster costumes are strongly encouraged
at Princess Katie and Racer Steve’s Monster Concert at 92YTribeca this Sunday.
We hear it includes a sneak peek of their new music video!
We bet young artists
ages 8-12 will be inspired by the urban-meets-Euro style of the Kehinde Wiley/The World Stage: Israel exhibit
at The Jewish Museum. The AM workshop includes a self-portrait session.
