Whether you end up staying one day or one week in the hospital after giving birth, it’s nice to make your time there as comfortable as possible—it helps you enjoy the new addition to your family all the more! While the list of what to pack in your hospital bag may be endless, here are just a few extras you’ll definitely be happy you brought.
A pillow from home. Lots of moms swear that maternity wards continually run out of extra pillows, but even if that’s not the case where you’re staying, it’s still nice to have a comfy pillow of your own for both during and after labor. Having a touch of home, including a favorite pillow case, makes your stay feel cozier and your hospital room at least a little bit familiar.
iPod. During the long hours of labor, there’s nothing like your favorite music to help get you through it. Most hospitals seem to have a stereo system where you can plug in yours—but check ahead and, if not, you can always bring your own portable speakers.
Your own toiletries. While the hospital may provide the basics like shampoo, soap, and toothpaste, it won’t be the kinds you’re used to. In fact, in our experience, what was provided was worse than generic hotel versions. After the most intense physical experience of your life, you’ll definitely want your own toiletries to freshen up with!
Snacks. If you haven’t stayed overnight at a hospital lately, you may not realize how yucky the food actually is. And you’ll definitely be hungry after giving birth! While your partner and family can always run and get takeout, it’s nice to have a supply of your favorite foods on hand to munch on. Especially if you give birth in the middle of the night and food options are limited!
Flip flops. These are useful for taking a shower in the hospital bathroom if you’re concerned about germs, and also just to have some footwear that’s easy to slip on when you’re roaming the halls of the maternity ward or even walking around your room.
Loose fitting clothes to go home in. Unless you’re one of those lucky moms whose body magically reverts to it’s pre-pregnancy shape after giving birth, you’ll likely be stuck in an awkward phase in the days and weeks to follow. Your maternity clothes will mostly be too big, while your regular clothes are still too tight. To travel home in, make sure to bring comfy, loose-fitting clothes like a pair of sweats and a flowy top (and make sure you pack these–not your husband or partner!).
